Cake Byte: The Second Annual Whoopie Pie Bake-Off At Oddfellows Ruled

Fact: The second annual Whoopie Pie Bake-Off at Oddfellows Cafe in Seattle totally ruled.

Don't believe me? Well, tough, because I have photo evidence. Here are just a few snapshots from a very sweet afternoon:

Judge Michael Wells takes his job very seriously.Celebrity judges. Megan Seling of The Stranger and Bake it in a Cake, Michael Wells of the Chamber of Commerce (also, Capitol Hill's premier bon vivant), Jennifer Shea of Trophy Cupcakes, just to name a few--plus, members of The Presidents of the United States of America and more!

There were so many delicious whoopie pies, and so beautifully presented. They were delicately sliced into fourths so that everyone could sample multiple types.

Rainbow whoopie pies, made by staffers at Linda's Tavern. Now, if this isn't my soul in Whoopie Pie form, I don't know what is.

Whoopie pie meets strawberry shortcake: a delectable strawberries and cream specimen.

So many flavor varieties. Here's a sampling of what you might have had on your plate had you been there. Not just chocolate whoopie pies here!

As a judge in the Gluten-free / vegan category of the bake-off, I was entitled to sit at a reserved table, and the judges all got pink champagne. YES!

Also, as a judge, I got a special name tag.

Some of the whoopie pies were even made with beer in the batter! These ones were made with a porter beer, I believe.

Just one example of a creative flavor: Lemon-coconut whoopie pies. NOM.

Pinkies-out: is that sea salt garnishing this whoopie pie?

There were even whoopie pies made with meringues!

Lucky someone: one of the winners won the original artwork I created for the poster! Sweet!

Thanks to the entire staff at Oddfellows (especially Tallulah!) as well as Audrey at Babeland for making this sweet event happen! For more awesome photos and a roundup including winners, visit Capitol Hill Seattle!

Cake Byte: Cupcake Royale's Gay Cupcakes Raise Money For a Sweet Cause

Yo, sweeties! Remember a while back how I posted about Cupcake Royale's totally gay cupcake for a totally sweet cause? Well, I have an update from the Royale folks:

During the prideful month of June, we wanted to use our super powers for good and we set a goal to raise $5,000 for the It Gets Better Project. Turns out the community went wild for the idea and gobbled up The Gay cupcake so we decided to double our donation.

This Thursday, we'd like to invite you to come celebrate with us as Cupcake Royale founder Jody Hall presents Dan Savage with a check for $10,000 for the It Gets Better Project. Jody, Dan and a Pride Foundation scholar will all say a few words about the personal importance of this project. And if you didn't get a chance to sample The Gay during the month of June, it will be making a limited reappearance for this event.

If you want more information on this effort, please give Amanda a call (206-883-7656) and she can tell you all about it. Jody and company are super proud of the effort and our ability to rally the community around this to make a difference for our young LGBT people.

Here are the details:

Thursday, July 14th at 4:30pm

Cupcake Royale, 1111 E Pike Street

What to expect:

  • Welcome and brief remarks
  • Jody Hall speaks
  • Dan Savage speaks
  • Pride Foundation scholar speaks
  • Presentation of check
  • Q & A

And after, since it is Art Walk night, stick around to enjoy the art of Benjamin Blackletter.

Cake Byte: Cake Pops by Seattle Cake Pop Company

I'd like to tell you about a company that was just born. It's just a few weeks old, and it's called Seattle Cake Pop Company. They don't even have a real website yet, just kind of this placeholder thingy.

I became acquainted with this baby at the Urban Craft Uprising, where they had a little kiosk where they were selling their pops.

And I looked that baby of a company's products in the eye and said "Get in my belly".

I grabbed a strawberry one, you know, because it was pink.

With a dense, sweet cakey filling and an equally sweet candy-melt coating, this was not necessarily a refined treat, and they would have been a bit easier to eat had they done the trick of dipping the stick in the candy coating before adhering the ball (so that it wouldn't just fall off the stick upon bite one)...but you know what? Overall, this was a supremely enjoyable sweet experience. It did the trick, and I'd be delighted to come across them again at another festival or encounter them at another birthday party.

Of course, if so inclined, you could make your own cake pops by following this tutorial or by buying my friend Bakerella's amazing book on the subject, Cake Pops: Tips, Tricks, and Recipes for More Than 40 Irresistible Mini Treats.

Look out for more in the future from Seattle Cake Pop Company.

Sweet Dilemma: CakeSpy Acts as Tie-Breaker in Ice Cream Cupcake Contest

Hey, remember how I got to judge (along with the lovely and amazing Nicole of Baking Bites and Naomi of Bakers Royale) an Ice Cream Cupcake Contest? You know, that one curated and put together by Scoopalicious and the Cupcake Project?

Well. We all made our declarations of our three favorites, but there was no clear winner (too many awesome entries!).

However, there were two finalists, per Stef:

As a testament to how incredible our entries were this year (check them all out if you haven't yet), there was no entry that was unanimously selected by all three judges.  However, you'll notice that the S’mores Cupcake Ice Cream Sandwiches by Stephanie of 52 Kitchen Adventures as well as the Honey Hazelnut Cupcake with Gianduja Gelato by Vivian of Vivian Macaron each received votes from Nicole (Baking Bites) and Naomi (Bakers Royale) - making them the strongest contenders.  Since Jessie (Cakespy) didn't choose either of them, we decided that she should have the tie-breaking vote to determine the contest winner.

Now, it was a tough decision, but ultimately I had to go with the Honey Hazelnut Cupcakes with Gianduja Gelato. But I really want you to know that this was like Sophie's Choice (OK, that is excessive, but I just want you to know it was really hard).

Congratulations to both of the finalists for bringing extreme deliciousness to all of our lives!

Cake Byte: CakeSpy Does Another Bathroom Mural Featuring Anthropomorphic Pastries

Guess what, sweet friends? I've done another mural. And once again, it depicts anthropomorphic sweets. And once again, it's in a bathroom. This time, it's not in Minneapolis, though: it's in Seattle, at the extremely delectable Bluebird Ice Cream.

That's right: CakeSpy, bathroom muralist extraordinaire, has done it again. This time, it's a scene of sweet treats in Capitol Hill, Seattle, which I am calling "Pike Street is Totally Sweet". Want to see some pictures? OK. My apologies as I have been working early mornings when the light isn't so great.

as you walk into the bathroom, this is what you'll see:

That's right...a scene of the entire block that Bluebird is on, between 12th and 13th Avenues on Pike Street...only in my world, it is populated by Capitol Hill Hipster Sweets!

Here are some detail shots:

...and, of course, a sweet star in the stall itself to remind you of something important while you...ah, do your business:

...yes, I know. It pretty much rules.

You can check out the mural for yourself; it's in the bathroom at Bluebird Ice Cream, 1205 E. Pike Street, Seattle; online here.  They will having an official unveiling of the mural at their 2nd birthday party!

Note to other bakeries: interested in your own (bathroom or other room) mural by CakeSpy? I will do it for you. What do I ask in return? You cover my travel, lodging, supplies, and pay me $100 a day (can give estimates on how many days it would take based on the space; the mural featured in this post, if worked on consecutively, would be about a 3-4 day job).

Berry Delicious: Strawberry Festival Cupcakes at Cupcake Royale for July

Image: Cupcake RoyaleThere's some serious sweetness afoot at Seattle's Cupcake Royale.

Starting tomorrow, they've got a special roster of Strawberry Cupcakes! Here's the 411, from their blog:

The 4th of July is just around the corner which means that summer can officially begin in Seattle. To celebrate, we're having a Strawberry Festival during the month of July! Our neighbors to the north, Skagit Sun, have supplied us with locally-sourced, organic strawberries that we incorporated into each of this month's four cupcake flavors. Our bakers have been busily consulting with grandmothers and country fair winners alike to come up with the most delicious flavor combinations and we think you'll love them as much as we do!

Strawberry 66 is our classic vanilla buttercake topped with Strawberry buttercream. The ingredients for this delicious cupcake are over 66% local, which we think makes it the most local cupcake around. Frank Bruni would be proud.

Chocolate Dipped Strawberry starts with our moist chocolate cake, then we add our strawberry buttercream and dip it into fine chocolate vermicelli.

Strawberry Shortcake has a sweet strawberry puree baked into a vanilla cake with a whipped cream strawberry frosting and topped with graham cracker crumbs.

Strawberry Velvet updates our classic red velvet cake with a whipped cream strawberry frosting.

I know, they all sound delicious. But...why decide? They make it super easy to try them all with the Strawberry Festival 4-pack, for $13.50. For more information or locations, visit cupcakeroyale.com!

Cake Byte: Molly Moon's Makes Sweet Merger with Chocolate Box in Downtown Seattle

Watch out, Seattle: you're about to get a whole lot sweeter. Molly Moon's is opening its FIFTH (yes, FIFTH!) Scoop Shop in Seattle--but this time, it's sweet fusion: they're making a merger with Chocolate Box, a confectionery shop a stone's throw from the Pike Place Market! Here's the official press release:

SEATTLE, Tuesday, June 28, 2011 – Molly Moon Neitzel today announced the opening of her fifth Seattle-based scoop shop to be located inside the already established Chocolate Box retail space at 108 Pine St. in downtown Seattle.

This business licensing agreement between Molly Moon’s and Chocolate Box owners Michel and Valerie Brotman is yet another example of Neitzel’s innovative business plans to grow the Moon’s brand in an exciting, but sustainable manner.

“I’m excited to be partnering with Michel and Valerie on the newest member of the Molly Moon’s family,” said Neitzel. “Expanding to downtown Seattle is an amazing opportunity for us and I look forward to sharing our signature ice creams and sorbets with its residents, professionals and tourists. It truly is a dream to showcase our flavors, which are made and inspired by local and seasonal ingredients, so close to Pike Place Market.”

“Our hope is that Chocolate Box becomes downtown Seattle’s favorite dessert destination,” said Brotman. “We're thrilled to be teaming with Molly and her crew, and know that Molly Moon’s ice cream will help us reach that exciting goal!”

But wait, there's more! In celebration of Moon’s downtown Seattle grand opening, kids 12 years of age and under, who visit the shop on Friday, July 1 between 3 and 5 p.m. will receive a complementary kid-sized scoop of their favorite flavor. Molly Moon’s at Chocolate Box will be open daily from 12-noon to 11 p.m.

For additional information about Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream, please visit mollymoonicecream.com. To learn more about Chocolate Box, please visit sschocolatebox.com.

Five Reasons Seattle Dessert Lovers Must Buy Keren Brown's Food Lover's Guide to Seattle

If you live in Seattle, you pretty much need to buy the newly released book Food Lovers' Guide to Seattle: Best Local Specialties, Markets, Recipes, Restaurants & Events by Keren Brown.

If you don't know Keren Brown (if you live in Seattle, and are involved with food at all, you probably do), she basically knows everything about the Seattle food scene. And this book is her love letter to the city and food she loves.

In the book, she shares "the inside scoop on the best places to find, enjoy, and celebrate these culinary treasures. A bounty of mouthwatering delights awaits you in this engagingly written guide, as well as a rich array of other, indispensable food-related information including Favorite restaurants and landmark eateries, Specialty food stores and markets, Food festivals and culinary events, and even recipes from some of Seattle's top chefs."

But for sweet-lovers, I'll give you five good reasons why you should buy this book.

  1. CakeSpy Shop is featured! A self-serving reason, yes. It is featured as a spot for gifts for foodies (although my store does not sell food!). OMG!
  2. There is an entire section dedicated to the city's best baked goods. Really, this reason alone would probably be enough to make the book worth buying, but please, see reason #1.
  3. You might just learn about a new specialty shop. I know I did! For instance, although I had vaguely heard of Punjab Sweets in Kent before, Keren's detailed listing of this confectionery shop has now made it a high priority on my to-do list!
  4. There's a section on sweets on the Eastside too. As an urbanite who often "doesn't go over there", it was nice to have a short-list of some of the best for when I do venture over the water.
  5. There are recipes from local chefs. For drinks, main courses (from the likes of one of my foodie heroes Kurt Dammeier)...but also desserts. One I can't wait to try? The Chocolate Ganache Cakes recipe from local celebrity chef Maria Hines.

And if these reasons haven't enticed you to buy my friend's book, then I am not sure we can be friends anymore. Buy it here. Keep up with Keren via her website, franticfoodie.com.

Cake Byte: Whoopie Pie Bake-Off at Oddfellows Cafe on July 12

It's time to make whoopie. Pies, that is. That's right: it's time for Whoopie Pie Bake-off, Part Deux!

Per the newsletter from Oddfellows:

Last year our Whoopie Pie Bake Off was a smack down between home and professional bakers. Winners were Heather Earnhardt of the Volunteer Park Café with her Red Velvet and Chocolate Raspberry Whoopie Pies, Chef Eliza (age 7) with her Sous Chef Robin had the best Classic Whoopie Pie, and Audrey McManus the babe from Babeland won the popular vote. Judges John Roderick, Molly Moon, Michael Wells, Christopher Frizzelle, Jen Graves, and Chelsea D. Lin consumed an inhuman amount of Whoopie Pies in order to determine these champions. While there may have been a few stomachaches, it sure was worth it!

Oddfellows Café + Bar will be having its Second Annual Whoopie Pie Bake Off on July 12, 2011 at 2pm at the communal table. This year it will be even bigger and better than ever! Last year our poor judges were over burdened by the amount of (delicious) entries, thus, this year we will have 9 judges, 3 per category, who are to be announced on our facebook page (facebook.com/Oddfellowscafe). The entries will be broken up into the following categories: professional bakers, home bakers, and gluten-free/vegan bakers who may be a combination of both, as well as the peoples choice, which will be decided by public vote. Within each category there will be a winner for best classic Whoopie Pie as well as Non Traditional Whoopie Pie.

Sweet Times: CakeSpy Visits The Wilton Headquarters

Of course you've heard of Wilton. They make, like, everything that you could ever dream of to decorate cakes with: pans, equipment, sprinkles, decorations, fondant and decorating icing, and so much more. And recently, myself and about 20 other awesome movers-and-bakers were invited for a day of buttercream bliss at their facilities in the Chicago area. Here, let me tell you all about my day.

8:30 am Departure. We boarded a bus (which had a Wilton sign, I believe) and departed for the Wilton offices nearby. I was a little nervous, but someone let me sit next to her.
9:00 am Welcome and Overview. Here, we learned a little bit about the Wilton method, the company's philosophy, etc. I also found out I was in a group for the day, comprised of myself, Kristan, and Rachel. Later on, we would have a cake decorating competition. We agreed as early as 9am that we were going to win.
9:30 – 11:15 am Wilton Decorating Course begins: we received a primer on how to work with buttercream in a decorating capacity, learned what different decorating tips work best for, and learned some of the techniques, including how to make rosettes, sweet peas, and pipe in various ways. I started out shaky:
...but eventually started to get better.
...but my sweet-peas just looked like chicken feet.
11:15 am Tour: Decorating Room and Photo Studio. This is where we got to see how they do photo shoots for catalogs and idea books...
...and they told us some of the trixy secrets they employ to make their cakes look great for catalogs and the like.
We also got to see their array of props and so on. We also got to see where they store their decorated display cakes, which made me think of a sort of confectionery hall-of-heads:
11:45 am Lunch Time. They told us about upcoming cake trends, their newest products being launched, and you know, a lot of us spent time eating sandwiches and gossiping about blog stuff. Interesting from the products being launched, though: they told us that decorative eyes are one of their most popular items. I made a mental note for later, for the decorating competition.
12:45 – 2:15 pm Decorating Course continued, this time with Fondant. We learned how to roll it properly, how to handle it, and how to make roses (among other things). We made a cute little fondant piece using various wilton products. I thought mine came out quite special:
2:15 – 3:15 pm Decorating Competition. IT WAS ON! Time to use our newfound cake decorating prowess. I said to my team: "you start frosting, and I will make the unicorn." Our cake, which came together in just an hour, was a thing of great beauty; we entitled it "Minefield of Magic". I was informed that it was really sort of an informal competition, to which I said "I don't care if it's not really a competition, we are totally going to win." Yes, I really said that. I think it's on video too. Here is my proud team:
...of course, we weren't the only ones who took it very seriously. Megan of Not Martha covered up completely so she could dig into the buttercream magic:
...and here is our cake.
Remember what I said about the decorative eyes? We really made good use of them, I think.
3:30 – 4pm Tour Time! We got to tour The Wilton School, where at the very moment we walked through, cake decorating goddess Collette Peters was teaching a class (OMG!); we also got to see the Wilton History Wall, which held a timeline of the company's past with photos and curios, such as:
...and of course, this:
we also got to see The Wilton Test Kitchen, where we learned about their recipe development process and how they simultaneously develop their new products to go along with them. It was very cool to see a prototype of a baking pan and see how it had developed into a final product.oh, and did I mention they had snacks? They had cupcakes...
and little tart-thingies...which turned out to be filled with blueberry:
4-5:30 pm: We got to Visit the Tent Sale. Like, OMG. Have you ever heard of the Wilton Tent Sale? It's a Bona Fide big deal. A huge tent--like, football field sized--is set up with excess product that is on extreme sale. It was an aggressive affair, and I hear that fights have broken out (maybe over the last decorative eye-sprinkles?)
6:30 – 9:00 pm Dinner and Awards Ceremony at Gordon Biersch. We won! We WON! Well, everyone won, actually. Every team received an award; ours was for "Most Outrageous Cake". Damn straight.
Overall? A pretty perfect day, full of learning, laughing, and, of course, plenty of cake.

This seasonal flavor is our staff pick for our "Best Cupcake Ever", and it is no wonder why... Coconut Cupcake, caramelized pineapple, Sailor Jerry's Coconut Rum Buttercream, a cherry... and to top it off a paper umbrella! Helllloo Summer!

Cake Byte: CakeSpy Gets To Tour the Wilton Test Kitchens!

Now, I don't want you to get too jealous, BUT.

In a little over a week, on June 9, your dear CakeSpy (along with a select handful of other sweetie-bloggers) will get the opportunity to attend a super-awesome event at the Wilton facilities in the Chicago area.

What is Wilton, you ask? Well, most cake lovers won't have to ask. But, if you aren't familiar with the name:

“For more than 80years, Wilton has been the industry leader in cake decorating, quality bakeware and food crafting. Wilton classes, publications and products help millions of people create celebrations filled with color, sweetness and fun.”

Basically, if you've ever decorated a cake, used a decorative cake pan, or piped icing onto something, you've probably used Wilton products.

I know! Awesome!

Featured events will include an overview and tour, a decorating workshop, a decorating challenge, and--the part that excites me most--a tour of the Wilton Test Kitchens. I know--it's the most exciting thing since I got to tour a butter factory!

And--even better--I get to meet in person several of the sweet dessert blog-writers whose work I admire. YES!

Now, don't worry, because even though you all can't be there with me, I promise to take pictures and take notes so that it can be just like you were there with me. K? Totally promise.

For more about Wilton, visit wilton.com.

Cake Byte: CakeSpy Mania at Seattle Weekly!

Have you ever been curious about the life of a spy?

Shame on you.

But, you know, if you want to stalk the sweetest sleuth around, I have some great new resources for you. Last week I was interviewed by the lovely and amazing Julien Perry, a Seattle food scene queen, who featured me not once, not twice, but thrice (!) in Seattle Weekly this week.

The first feature is an interview in which you can learn some of my stories and secrets, and hear me say amusing things such as " cupcakes will be out of style when happiness is out of style." You can read that interview here.

The second is a simple "death round" q+a in which I admit guilty pleasures, flavor preferences, trash-talk about fussy French macarons, and confess my secret foodie fantasy:

What is your biggest foodie fantasy?

Sometimes I have this dream where I am the forbidden love child of Duncan Hines and Betty Crocker. Too bad Duncan is dead and Betty doesn't really exist.

You can see the whole dish here.

And for a grand finale, part three featured a recipe from yours truly, which comes from my upcoming book, CakeSpy Presents Sweet Treats for a Sugar-Filled Life (pre-order now!), for a little somethin' called Birthday Cake French Toast.

Thanks again, Seattle Weekly, for featuring CakeSpy!
